Flat and Dynamism 2023   フラット・アンド・ダイナミズム 2023

 

The "Flat and Dynamism Project" is an attempt to visualize the Earth's respiration through the application of blue paint to tree trunks, representing the surface of water that may have existed there in ancient times.

Moerenuma Park (Sapporo, Hokkaido), designed by Isamu Noguchi, is lined with approximately 1,000 larch trees in a circle of about 200 meters in diameter, surrounding a sea fountain. Ever since the park was established, I have loved these larch groves, which look like saucers that have suddenly landed on the spacious lawn. In the summer, park visitors come and go through the woods to enjoy the shade of the trees and the attractions of the fountain. As a site for art that welcomes people without any fuss, the idea of implementing a project here came to me, and I was fortunate enough to be able to make it happen.

The production process involved preliminary experimentation, surveying for application positioning, wrapping of masking tape, application of powdered chalk using brushes, and removal at the end of the exhibition period. For this reason, a total of about 30 volunteers helped with the project, and the public was invited to share in the project's completion work at a workshop held on the day of completion. Needless to say, the creation of a single work of art with a large number of people and the development of this project in a way that does not set standards for how the work is to be viewed have made a great deal of progress in my own artistic expression.

「フラット・アンド・ダイナミズム・プロジェクト」は、木々の幹に塗布する青色によって、太古の時代にそこに存在したかもしれない水面を表現し、地球の呼吸の可視化を試みるものだ。

イサム・ノグチによって設計されたモエレ沼公園（北海道札幌市）には、海の噴水を取り囲む形で、約1000本のカラマツの木が直径約200mの円形に立ち並ぶ。公園が開設されて以来、私は広々とした芝生の広場に突如として降り立った円盤のような、このカラマツの林がとても好きだ。夏は公園の利用者が、林の木陰や噴水のアトラクションを楽しむために林の中を行き来する。人々を気負いのない状態で迎え入れるアートの現場として、ここでプロジェクトを実施する構想が浮かび上がり、幸運にも実現に至ることが出来た。

制作作業は、事前の実験、塗布の位置決めのための測量、マスキングテープの巻き付け、ハケを使った粉チョークの塗布、展示期間終了時の撤去作業などを伴う。そのため、延べ30人ほどのボランティアの協力をいただき、完成日に開催したワークショップでは、一般の方々にもプロジェクトの完成作業を共有していただいた。1つのアートを多数の人達と創り上げていくことや、作品の鑑賞の仕方に基準を設けない形で展開する今回の取り組みが、自身の美術表現に大きな進展を与えてくれたことは言うまでもない。
